Educational Use of Nonhuman Animals in U.S. Veterinary Medical Schools for the 1998 - 1999 School Year

- Publication date: 17 September 2000

This survey was done by the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) from January, 1999 to May, 2000. You can access the title page or the summary for more information.

From this survey it was determined that the following disciplines use the most animals for terminal and detrimental, and invasive and detrimental, teaching exercises: Anatomy, Clinical Procedures, Medical Diagnostic Techniques, and Surgery. In keeping with the goals of the survey, we developed a list of some of the alternatives to the harmful use of animals that are available for each discipline. Below are links to the documents which were generated to include those alternatives. These documents, with a letter requesting the school to provide us with appropriate follow-up personnel, were sent to each veterinary school in the U.S. Administrators were reminded that these and other alternatives are contained in our extensive database on the subject, Alternatives in Education.
